Okay, so I have my first failure on my first recipe! To be fair, it was still delicious and enjoyable, just NOT what I was expecting at all.

For breakfast this morning, I made french toast. I wanted to do something a little more special than our standard maple-syrup-and-whipped-cream for topping, so I choose this blueberry compote recipe from Epicurious. It didn’t thicken at all! I even added a bit of cornstarch, and nothing happened. It also took forever to cool off even a little bit.

That said, it was delicious. It soaked into the french toast nicely, and it had just the right amount of sweetness. We have tons of leftovers, so we’ll see if it thickens as it sits in the fridge today. I would recommend it for french toast or pancakes, and I bet it would be delicious on vanilla ice cream!

The Plan

30Dec07

Hokay, so here’s the earth plan: I’m going to set out to make at least one new recipe each week, for 2008 (and hopefully, beyond).

Every week, I’ll blog about what we’re eating, and what I’m trying. The old, stand-by things we throw together, the meals Adam makes for me, the new recipes I’m tackling, and whatever else comes along food-wise in my life.

I want to learn more about locally- and seasonally-available ingredients, too, so I want to write about what I learn, too.

How exciting! I’m a little terrified, to be honest. I feel like this is a tall order, but if Julie Powell (author of Julie and Julia) can tackle 524 of Julia Child’s recipes in a year, I can put my big girl panties on and learn 52 new recipes of varying levels of difficulty.

So – if you want to tell me how easy this will be, how hard it will be, or suggest a recipe I should try, let me know! Drop me a comment, or email me at onlytoliveblogATgmailDOTcom. I’d love to hear from the random interneters.

An experiment

11Dec07

Yep, that’s what this will be, one great experiment.

Over the course of a year, can I learn to be a better, more confident cook? Can I challenge myself to try new things and give the things I hate another try?
